Oh Summer! You Wacky Girl!
Clearly I've been spirited off by the siren of summer, but that wasn't before my father and I finished the roof (front of house we started in May).
The roof is great now, having undone the fraudulent work of the previous roofers. We still have a shed to do, but it's not an emergency. After that one, I think I might retire from the roofing business.
The ladyfriend and I are now in Nova Scotia, enjoying our new cottage and making it our own slowly but surely. I've got three knitting projects on my needles at the moment. My new guideline for my WIPs is as follow - three is the magic number (if you can, please sing De La Soul here), one has to be a TV/car knit (aka no need to look at or keep track of much), one should be more technical/interesting, and one should be for the upcoming season (I'd like to be ahead of the game every once in awhile). Of course one project might meet two guidelines, like the John Galliano sweater that was published by British Elle in 1986 (back in the day when they had knitting patterns - oh the glory days!) is for fall/winter and has a traveling cable and unique construction.
I'm using some vintage yarn that came with matching tweed fabric (!) that I bought on eBay a hundred years ago. There were supposed to be patterns with it, but they were not included. I'm playing a little yarn chicken as I don't know how many yards I have of the stuff, but I'll be okay with 3/4 length sleeves should it come to that.
The other sweaters I'm working on are a simple, in-the-round, sweater for my mother (per her instructions and choice of yarn) and Pasture, by Annie Rowden, which I'm absolutely loving.
It's not only the easy shape that is appealing; it's the yarn from Woolen Rabbit - a blend of merino, silk, and cashmere. I've got the body almost finished; just waiting for the needle I forgot to bring to arrive in the post. Such is life!
I have plans to unravel a cardigan I made years ago but have never been happy with the fit of to make a pattern from the most recent (and first) issue of Making.
Additional crafty ambitions I have while at the cottage are to work on Shake-n-Make's English paper piecing project for our Hand of Craft show next year and the Gallery tunic. I also have the pieces for the Alabama Chanin sampler quilt (from the first book) here, which I consider an ongoing cottage-based project.
I'm looking to the time here as an opportunity for making in all its forms. I'll be working on stories as well and canning and cooking and living the life I'm constantly crafting for myself. It's a luxury to have this time and space, and I plan to enjoy every moment of it.

Pictures from a Purge
It's been a busy couple of weeks, what with a purge and a major birthday and a job to boot!
The purge went well. It is only the first step of many, and the state of our lives at the moment (final weeks of semester and more), mean that we have to wait for the next purge (books!).
This is what I'll say about the process - I didn't necessarily have a physical reaction to everything I touched or at least one that I acknowledged. But I did take the time to consider each item and found it pretty easy to let things go, especially since in addition to bags and bags of donations (10 bags or so) and bins for things for eBay (five bins), I curated a group for a friend and have some other clothing gifts to give out. It's important to me that my clothing has a happy (or deserving - hah!) home.
Sometimes Joy is quiet.

Look what the ladyfriend found - Girbaud jeans she'd patched in the '90s! As Karen says, "Boro jeans!" Yes, they spark Joy!
The closet after the dust settled (note there are a couple of things hanging that will be going on eBay; I just didn't want them on the floor or in a bin.)
The ladyfriend's fleece drawer, which elicits all kinds of responses. Many of them along the lines of "You have so many fleeces." The ladyfriend says a fleece is like a mullet when paired with a dress shirt - all business underneath, all party on top!

Expanded Ventures
I finally feel like I'm in a good groove for the new season and semester. There's a lot I want to accomplish, and there are a lot of things that I'm working on simultaneously like finishing my short story collection, paying down my debts (while still finding ways to do the things I like to do), and meeting my obligations.
Not that this is new, but I'm on a budget. We're trying to go to Berlin in 2013, and our goal is to be debt-free when we go. The budget has been challenging; however, on the best days, I treat it like a new way to be crafty because to live happily on a budget you have to be crafty.
Some of the ways I've cut costs as well as added funding have been: playing hockey only once a week (instead of twice), reimagining my existing wardrobe (new combos and so forth), doing an "energy exchange" for my yoga classes, selling stuff on ebay (my user name is "hopespringseternal"), and working one day a week at the Melissa (read a recent review here). Here I am in front of the store last December:
I'm really excited to be working there. It started as a way to help my friend out, and now it's become (even before my first day in the shop) another creative outlet for me - dressing for retail! Yes, everything is an opportunity for a new way to look at your wardrobe. I'm sensing a lot of hats for this one.
In other areas - I'm less than two weeks away from the marathon in San Francisco. I ran 21.5 miles last week, and it made me feel good about the whole thing. I'm in the lovely tapering phase right now; my runs are getting shorter in preparation. I'm still nervous, but I've taken pressure off myself by just focusing on the run itself and not my time or any of those other concerns. Plus, I get to see 'the boy' (aka our son), which is worth crawling the entire thing.
And prep is another theme for me right now. Not to make your eyes roll, but I am thinking about the upcoming December holidays. As someone who tries to make the majority of her gifts, I need to make a plan so that I don't spend all of December in the "craftory" - the craft factory. Prep is a way to maintain holiday sanity as well.
All in all, everything feels pretty good. I hope I can find ways to expand that feeling throughout the upcoming months and beyond.
